Klippe Rivier Country House becomes newest FTTSA-certified establishment
July 01, 2004

Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) welcomes Klippe Rivier Country House as the newest FTTSA-certified tourism establishment.

FTTSA is an independent non-profit initiative established by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) to promote equitable and sustainable tourism development in South Africa. FTTSA certifies tourism establishments with a special Trademark if they adhere to criteria including fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practice and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. Core values of FTTSA are: fair share, democracy, respect, reliability, transparency and sustainability.

A survey conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres among British adults found that 80% would be more likely to book a holiday with a company if it had a written policy to guarantee good working conditions for staff, protect the environment and support local charity destinations.

Other current FTTSA Trademark Users, leaders in fair and sustainable tourism helping to transform the South African tourism industry, are: Calabash Lodge and Tours (Port Elizabeth), Masakala Traditional Guesthouse (south Drakensberg), Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge (Elim, Limpopo), Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve (Sabi Sands), Spier Leisure (Stellenbosch), and Stormsriver Adventures (Tsitsikamma, Garden Route).

Klippe Rivier Country House is a magnificent Cape Dutch Homestead on the outskirts of Swellendam, two hours from Cape Town and the Garden Route. It stands in a tranquil setting, surrounded by orchards and farmlands. The majority of Klippe Rivier staff members are previously disadvantaged individuals from rural backgrounds, who have since received training and gained secure employment. They have gained confidence and are earning good wages. A philosophy of Klippe Rivier’s is to support small enterprises and buy local whenever possible. Guests are encouraged to visit local art and craft businesses.

Says Jennifer Seif, National Coordinator of FTTSA, “Klippe Rivier provides secure employment and fair wages to its staff members, which are both important Fair Trade criteria. Many small businesses struggle to provide sustainable jobs. Klippe Rivier’s exceptional success in this regard despite factors of seasonality should be commended.”
